Maui Evangelical Church History

Maui Evangelical Church came into existence through the dedication of former members fo the Puunene Filipino Evangelical Church. The old church, located in Alabama Camp, was founded in 1922 to serve the needs of the Filipino immigrants working on the plantations. Its founder and first Pastor was the Rev. Pedro F. Royola, who was succeeded the following year by the Rev. Emeterio Centeno, who served until 1953. Centeno was followed by the Rev. Jose Rosimo (1953-1959) and the Rev. Simeon Ibera (1959-1966).

When the plantation villages were closed, several of the Puunene church members banded together to start a church in Kahului that would serve not only Filipinos but other Protestants located from the camps.

In 1966 the Hina Avenue lot where the church is currently situated was purchased and construction of a new church began. On August 27, 1972 construction was completed and Maui Evangelical Church was dedicated to the service of the Lord.

Our current Pastor, the Rev. Walter T. Baloaloa, was called by the church from the Philippines and started his work in April, 1973. In addition to his work at Maui Evangelical Church, since 1985 Reverend Baloaloa supplies the pulpit of the Paia Hawaiian Protestant Church, Paia, Maui, Hawaii. Email: phpc@flex.com and phone number is 808-579-8900. Services on Sundays is at 11:00 a.m. and hymns are being sung in Hawaiian.

The church underwent a major renovation including improvements to the church sanctuary that was completed in 1966. Air conditioning units were installed to make the worship area a more comfortable place to worship and church gatherings.

In addition, a new second story was added to the social hall. All of this was made possible through the support and generous gifts received from members and friends of the church. Throughout the years the church has been most fortunate to receive generous memorial gifts from members and friends that has enabled the church to continue in its efforts to improve the church and acquire new equipments.

As an extension program of Maui Evangelical Church, the church operates a year round Preschool. The school is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Phone number is: 808-877-6604
